Mosquito Identification

What are mosquitoes?

The phrase “everything is bigger in Texas” also applies to mosquitoes. Mosquitoes themselves are small in size but cause big problems for homeowners. The mosquito is a type of fly, and the females bite to consume blood meals from animals or people in order to produce viable eggs.

Mosquitoes are most active in hot, humid weather making Cedar Hill, TX & the surrounding areas a place where they thrive. They swarm in large numbers and make it so we cannot enjoy our outdoor spaces.

Are mosquitoes dangerous?

Mosquitoes are linked to many diseases that can make people ill, like the West Nile virus, chikungunya, dengue, and encephalitis.

In addition to the diseases they spread through their bites, the mosquito bites themselves are unpleasant and uncomfortable. Bite sites usually develop red, raised, itchy welts. Scratching at the bite sites can cause a secondary infection, especially for children.

Another issue with mosquitoes is that their presence on our properties can be stressful. It can be challenging to enjoy your yard while constantly being surrounded and bitten by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes can turn your yard from an oasis into a nightmare.

Why do I have a mosquito problem?

Mosquitoes are pests that have been around for what seems like forever, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look like they will be leaving anytime soon. Knowing why mosquitoes are a problem on your property is the best way to limit their numbers and take away the things they want!

There are three main reasons mosquitoes are in your yard, the first being your property is providing them with standing water for the females to use as breeding sites.

The second reason is that your property is providing them with resting spots. In order to escape the direct sun and heat, many mosquitoes rest during the middle of the day. Popular resting spots include areas under trees and shrubs, tall grass and weeds, within woodpiles, or spaces under decks.

The third reason mosquitoes are likely on your property is that they have discovered a reliable food source. In addition to feeding on blood, both females and males feed on plant nectar as their primary food source. Lots of flowers, flowering weeds, and flowering trees will attract mosquito activity.

Where will I find mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes live in their largest populations near areas of standing water. If your property is near or has on it ponds, drainage ditches, marshes, wetlands, or heavily wooded areas, you are going to experience problems with mosquitoes.

While mosquitoes can travel, they mainly stay close to where they hatch, creating larger and larger populations as time goes on. In our yards, standing water often collects in various places, including the following:

  • Clogged gutters
  • Buckets and other containers like flower pots
  • Wading pools
  • Birdbaths
  • Low-lying areas
  • Old tires
  • Piles of construction debris
  • Brush piles and leaf piles
  • Tree hollows and tree stumps
